| CIC | Carrier Identification Code | This is used to tell your LEC to which carrier you want to presubscribe. It is also dialed when making casual calls. |

| LDA | Long Distance Access Fee | A fee imposed by the FCC to help to cover the cost of connecting your 1+ telephone line to the PSTN for long distance service. |
| LEC | Local Exchange Carrier | Your long distance call goes from your phone to your IXC via one of these (e.g. Pac Bell, Bell Atlantic). |
| LOA | Letter of Agency | This is a formal request from a customer to a provider indicating that you authorize them to change your service on your behalf. AVCInc requires an LOA to change your RespOrg for existing 8XX numbers that you want to port to AVCInc. |
| NPA | Numbering Plan Area | The first 3 digits of your 10 digit North American phone number. |
| NXX | Exchange Number | The second 3 digits of your 10 digit North American phone number. |
| PAC | Project Accounting Code | A special number that you dial when making 1+ calls that appears on your bill advice to allocate time and costs to tasks. Verified PACs also provide security against unauthorized use. This is an optional service mainly used by businesses. |
| PIC | Presubscribed Interexchange Carrier | The IXC you designate to automatically serve your 1+ calls. |
| PIN | Personal Identification Number | The last 4 digits of your calling card number used to identify and authenticate the card user. |
| PSC | Public Service Commission | Some states have PSCs, others have PUCs. |
| PSTN | Public Switched Telephone Network | IXCs and LECs collaborate to provide service via the PSTN. |
| PUC | Public Utility Commission | These guys regulate your in-state long distance service. |
| RBOC | Regional Bell Operating Company | In 1983 AT&T was broken into seven Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs): Nynex, Bell Atlantic, Bell South, Southwest Bell, US West, Pacific Telesis, Ameritech. Even though names have been changed and mergers have taken place, the seven RBOCs still operate in the same territories as they did in 1983 and collectively cover 85% of the consumers in the 48-states. |
